"John Anderson, a Scottish immigrant who set up business in Cork and flourished in the last part of the 18th century, bought part of Fermoy Estate and, as well as giving land for military barracks on which the town's prosperity grew, laid out the present day town in its present attractive form. Anderson also founded the Irish mail coach system, laid the first five principal roads in the country to carry his coaches, and set up several industries in the town itself."
