In the mid 1960s the first vineyards were planted in Margaret River after the areas was identified as having the potential to rival the world's best grape growing regions.
Surrounded by forest, farmland and sea, the region has a classic Mediterranean climate, rich soils and fresh winds from the vast, unpolluted Indian and Southern Oceans, creating a near-perfect environment for growing of vines. This allows the grapes to grow relatively free from pests and diseases, and viticulture can be practiced with minimum interference.
The results speak for themselves - award winning wines that are keenly sought the world over.
Over the past 40 years Margaret River has fulfilled its potential, developing an international reputation as one of the world's premium wine growing regions. The Bordeaux varieties of Cabernet, Merlot, Semillion and Sauvignon Blanc grow exceptionally well. Chardonnay also thrives.
The area is characterised by small wineries, many of which are family owned and run, producing small volumes of world class wines.
