Wonderful news just in – Fermoy has won the prestigious Best in Show at the 2024 Decanter World Wine Awards for our Fermoy 2020 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Decanter World Wine Awards is regarded as the world’s largest and most influential wine competition. Judged by top wine experts, Best in Show is the highest accolade in the competition, awarded only to the top 50 (0.27%) wines of the show, out of more than 18,000 entries from across the world.

Making outstanding Cabernet is our raison d'être, the pinnacle of what we do. To win an award for Cabernet is exceptionally gratifying.

Senior Winemaker Jeremy Hodgson is thrilled with the win; “To have our Reserve Cabernet recognised as the very best is not only a win for Fermoy, but it shines the light once again on Margaret River being a consistently world-class producer of Cabernet Sauvignon.”

Grown in deep gravel loams on a south-facing hill draining down to the Wilyabrup Brook, Fermoy Cabernet ripens in conditions beautifully moderated by the nearby Indian Ocean. Planted in 1985, the finest rows are handpicked and matured for 18 months in tight-grained French oak barriques, making for an elegant and perfumed Cabernet. Hodgson praised vineyard manager Andy Keig, “It’s said that great wine is made in the vineyard, and our Cabernet vines grow consistently beautiful fruit, year in, year out. The wine is a superb expression of the site.”

Winning top honours for the 2020 is a culmination of consistently good results for our Reserve Cabernet across multiple vintages, particularly since 2017. Of note too, is the recent success of our younger wines, with the 2021 also awarded gold at this year's DWWA, and the 2022 just last week winning gold at the International Wine & Spirit Challenge.

The Fermoy 2020 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is available to taste and buy at Fermoy Cellar Door. It is also available to purchase online as a limited release for $99 per bottle and as part of an exclusive Reserve Cabernet Flight Pack.

The judges comments: "Do Cabernet Sauvignon and Margaret River go together? Well, it’s the fourth time that the combination has been featured in our Best In Show selection – so yes, they do. Three of those laureates, intriguingly, have come from the high-quality, low-quantity 2020 vintage – and if this wine is anything to go by, it’s a vintage which is taking its time to reach even early maturity. This wine remains an opaque black-red in colour, with admirably pure and restrained aromas of shapely blackcurrant lent freshening complexity by bush and scrub notes – a single sniff is transporting. The wine is concentrated and refined on the palate. Not merely fruity, though there is plenty of that ‘noble’ blackcurrant to enjoy, but the fruit is lent shade and nuance by the biotope allusions evident on the nose. The tannins and acids are measured and proportionate; the ripeness well-judged; and the wine moves through the mouth with easy, drinkable grace." 97-points
